Call to the Sea: Veterans Push to Expand Naval Scouts Program for National Security

Sea Scouts Program Aims to Forge Future Mariners and Patriots

BENGALURU — At a Navy Day celebration event, a retired naval officer called for a significant expansion of the Sea Scouts & Guides movement in Karnataka, framing it as a crucial incubator for maritime skills, national discipline, and patriotism among the youth.

Capt. Dr. Uday Chand Kondath, a retired naval officer, emphasized the organization’s vital role in shaping character and capability. “Sea Scouts & Guides play a vital role in nurturing discipline, service-mindedness, responsibility, naval skills, and leadership qualities among children and youth,” he stated. He urged for more young people across the state to actively participate in the program.

More Than Knots and Boats: Building a Maritime Mindset

The event, organized by the Bengaluru Division of the Sea Scouts and Guides of India at Regency Public School, highlighted the wing’s unique focus. Unlike standard scouting, it immerses students in marine-related skills like seamanship, boat handling, and sea navigation.

Capt. Kondath connected this training directly to broader national interests. “Just like the Navy and Air Force wings, the Sea Scouts & Guides unit is equally essential, as maritime strength plays a crucial role in national security,” he noted. He argued that fostering a deep understanding of the seas from a young age is foundational for a maritime nation.

A Pathway to Service and Career

A key part of the appeal, according to Capt. Kondath, is the clear pathway the program provides to future service and employment. “The Navy offers vast career opportunities for young aspirants, and schools in Karnataka must guide students to make the best use of these possibilities,” he said.

He reiterated a dual call to action: for the state to encourage more participation in Sea Scouts & Guides, and for children to be inspired to eventually join the Navy to serve the nation.

The program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Gopi Shetty, Captain Superintendent and Founder of the Sea Scouts & Guides of India’s Bengaluru Division. The event was attended by several dignitaries including Raghavendra Poojari H. S., BPYAK program in-charge; Mid-Shipman Mrs. Geeta Chandrashekar; Principal Rama Karthik; and teaching staff.

The gathering served as a microcosm of the program’s goal: bringing together educators, naval veterans, and students to champion a culture of maritime awareness and disciplined service for the country’s future.
