“From Commute to Lifeline: Bengaluru Metro Facilitates Successful Organ Transplant”

Metro Ride Saves Life: Successful Liver Transplant Marks First for Bengaluru’s Metro

Bengaluru, August 2025 – In a groundbreaking feat, Bengaluru’s Metro played a pivotal role in saving a life by transporting a donated liver from Whitefield to Raj Rajeshwari Nagar, facilitating a successful liver transplant surgery at Sparsh Hospital.
The liver, donated from a 24-year-old brain-dead individual, was transported to Sparsh Hospital via the Metro, covering a distance of 31 kilometers in just 55 minutes. This swift transportation ensured the liver’s viability and enabled the medical team to perform the transplant surgery within the critical time frame.
A Life-Saving Collaboration
The transplant recipient, a 30-year-old man from Raj Rajeshwari Nagar, had been battling severe hepatitis and was in dire need of a liver transplant. The Sparsh Hospital team, led by Dr. Mahesh Gopasetty, Senior Consultant for Liver Transplantation, sprang into action upon receiving the donated liver. “The coordination between the Metro, Karnataka Organ Transplant Authority, and Sparsh Hospital was seamless, making this life-saving transplant possible,” said Dr. Gopasetty.
Metro’s Timely Intervention
Given the heavy traffic congestion in Bengaluru, transporting the liver by road would have taken at least 3-4 hours. The Metro’s assistance was sought, and they readily agreed to facilitate the transportation. A special arrangement was made to transport the liver from Whitefield’s private hospital to Kadugodi Metro Station, and then from Raj Rajeshwari Nagar Metro Station to Sparsh Hospital. The Metro dedicated its purple line’s last coach for this purpose, ensuring minimal disruption to regular passenger traffic.
A Testament to Compassion and Coordination
Colonel Rahul Tiwari, CEO of Sparsh Hospital, Raj Rajeshwari Nagar, praised the Metro’s role in saving lives. “The Metro has not only become a lifeline for millions of commuters but has also demonstrated its commitment to serving humanity in times of crisis. By facilitating the transportation of organs, the Metro has played a vital role in giving life to those in need.”
A New Benchmark in Organ Transplantation
Dr. Mahesh Gopasetty added, “This initiative showcases the potential of coordinated efforts between civic authorities, medical institutions, and public transportation systems. When we work together, we can achieve remarkable feats and make a significant difference in people’s lives.”
The patient is currently recovering in the ICU, and the medical team is optimistic about his chances of recovery. This successful transplant marks a new milestone in Bengaluru’s healthcare landscape, highlighting the city’s potential for innovative and collaborative solutions.
