IISc Celebrates Academic Excellence at 2025 Convocation
Bengaluru, July 11, 2025 – The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) held its annual convocation today at the JN Tata Auditorium, honoring students who completed their degrees in the 2024-25 academic year. Renowned mathematician Prof. Manjul Bhargava from Princeton University graced the event as Chief Guest, while Senapathy ‘Kris’ Gopalakrishnan, Chair of IISc’s Council, attended as the Guest of Honour.
A total of 1,487 PhD and Master’s students and 106 undergraduate students received their degrees, with 84 exceptional scholars awarded medals for academic excellence.
A Century of Excellence and Growth
In his address, Senapathy ‘Kris’ Gopalakrishnan reflected on IISc’s remarkable journey since its inception. He paid tribute to Jamshedji Tata, whose vision and generosity—donating a third of his wealth—laid the foundation for what is now a globally recognized institution.
“From its humble beginnings with just 30 members and two courses, IISc has grown into a powerhouse of education and research, now home to 6,000 students and staff offering around 800 courses,” Gopalakrishnan said. He highlighted the institute’s consistent ranking as India’s No. 1 in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and its expansion into advanced integrated degree programs, including skill development and industry-oriented courses.
He also announced the upcoming launch of a new Medical School, which will introduce master’s and doctoral programs starting next year.
Aim for Greatness, Not Just Excellence: Bhargava’s Inspiring Message
Prof. Manjul Bhargava, celebrated mathematician and Fields Medalist, commended the graduating students for their achievements at one of India’s most prestigious institutions.
“With the world-class education, critical thinking skills, and technical knowledge you’ve gained here, you have the power to excel in any field you choose,” he told the graduates.
Urging them to push boundaries, Bhargava said, “Don’t settle for excellence—strive for greatness. Be innovative, be creative, and go beyond what is expected. Your education has equipped you not just to follow but to lead and redefine the future.”
