Karnataka Beats Global Trends: Startup Ecosystem Hits $152.8 Billion as AI Innovation Soars
Bengaluru: Karnataka has solidified its position as a global technology powerhouse, climbing to the second spot in Asia for Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation and entering the global top 10 for both ecosystem performance and Research and Development (R&D).
The state government, alongside the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) and Startup Genome, officially released these highlights from the Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) 2026, which was originally unveiled at VivaTech in Paris. The comprehensive report tracks data from over 5.5 million companies across 350 innovation hubs globally.

According to the 2026 index, Bengaluru-Karnataka maintains its rank as the 15th best startup ecosystem globally. Notably, the region’s growth rate is three times higher than the Asian average. Since 2021, the local ecosystem value has surged by an unprecedented 190%, reaching a total valuation of $152.8 billion. This easily outperforms the global average growth of 149% and Asia’s average of 66% over the same period.
Between 2021 and 2025, the region generated $46 billion through 304 successful startup exits, outpacing Singapore in exit value. Capital velocity remains exceptionally high, with an average exit timeline of 8.2 years compared to the global average of 11.1 years. The state also attracted $39 billion in venture capital funding during this four-year window, placing it 4th in Asia and among the top 15 globally for capital mobilization.
The report highlights a dramatic leap in Karnataka’s R&D engine, which skyrocketed from the top 30 in 2025 to the global top 10 in 2026. This surge reflects increased patent commercialization, heavily backed by premier institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), ISRO, DRDO, C-DAC, and NAL, alongside emerging deep-tech projects in quantum computing and aerospace.

Furthermore, Karnataka commands a dominant 58% share of India’s total AI venture funding. Beyond its second-place regional ranking in AI, the ecosystem ranks among the top 30 globally for talent quality, the top 20 in Asia for affordable tech talent, and the top 30 in Asia for funding runway longevity.
“Bengaluru-Karnataka is no longer just the startup capital of India; it is rapidly evolving into a premier global hub for deep-tech and AI innovation,” said Priyank Kharge, Minister for IT, BT, and Electronics. “This global recognition validates our long-term investments in talent, research, and emerging technologies. As we build Karnataka’s deep-tech decade, our goal remains clear: to nurture next-generation companies here that will create a lasting global impact.”
The findings underscore the strategic role played by KDEM in positioning the state as a destination for AI and research-driven enterprises. Complete details of the report have been made accessible on the official portal at www.karnatakadigital.in.
