Beyond the Big Screen: Naveen Shankar Champions Student Cinema at JUSFF 2026
BENGALURU – In an era where digital content is king, the power of concise storytelling took center stage at the third edition of the JAIN University Short Film Festival (JUSFF) 2026. Hosted by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), the festival has emerged as a critical bridge between academic creativity and the professional film industry.
The event, which kicked off on April 8, was headlined by Filmfare Critics Award-winning actor Naveen Shankar. Known for his gritty performance in Dharani Mandala Madhyadolage, Shankar used the platform to inspire the next generation of visual storytellers, emphasizing that the heart of cinema lies in conviction rather than budget.
“Cinema is not just about big screens, but about ideas, passion, and the courage to start,” Shankar remarked during the inauguration. “What starts as a small effort on a college campus can grow into something truly impactful.”
A Growing National Platform
The 2026 edition marked a significant leap in the festival’s prestige. Dr. Bhargavi D. Hemmige, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, revealed that the festival received over 90 registrations from across India. This year’s submissions were notably tied to industry heavyweights, including Vijay Sethupathi Productions and Ravi Basrur, the acclaimed music director behind the KGF and Salaar franchises.
“The reach and recognition of JUSFF are growing nationwide,” Dr. Hemmige noted. “We are seeing submissions that are already rubbing shoulders with reputable names in the Indian film industry.”

The Evolution of the Short Format
University leadership highlighted a shift in how short-form media is perceived. No longer viewed merely as a “warm-up” for feature films, officials argued that short films are now a primary medium for social influence and artistic expression.
“Short films are no longer stepping stones; they are powerful storytelling formats in their own right,” stated Dr. Kiran S, Deputy-Dean of Academics. This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Sangeeta Devanathan, who noted that as audience attention spans evolve, the short format is becoming the “future of storytelling,” providing a compelling reason for audiences to engage without the three-hour commitment of traditional cinema.

Nurturing Raw Talent
The festival structure intentionally focuses on the “foundational level” of filmmaking. Naveen Shankar observed that these festivals provide a necessary laboratory for students to experiment and understand the harsh realities of the craft before entering the professional world.
Dr. Dinesh Nilkant, Pro-Vice Chancellor of JAIN University, asserted that the industry’s future stars are found in classrooms rather than executive boardrooms. “Creativity makes a difference with the best talents always budding from colleges and universities and not from big studios,” he said. “We are building such platforms to nurture these future filmmakers.”

Jury Insights and Competition
The screening process was overseen by a professional jury, including Naveen Dwarakanath, a multifaceted producer, director, and writer. Reflecting on the submissions, Dwarakanath praised the “remarkable leap” in quality compared to previous years.
“As a jury member, what stands out is the evolving storytelling quality among young creators,” Dwarakanath said. “Cinema connects people; it builds emotional bonds, even within families. That’s the beauty of it!”
The festival’s first day featured 12 shortlisted films in the student category, showcasing a diverse range of narratives. The second day is set to transition into the professional category, culminating in a valedictory ceremony. Awards will be presented for Best Actor (Male/Female), Best Cinematography, Best Director, and the coveted Best Film award across both tiers.
As JUSFF 2026 continues, it solidifies its reputation not just as a campus event, but as a legitimate launchpad for the cinematic voices of tomorrow.
