‘Don’t Ignore the Backwards’: SDPI Calls on Siddaramaiah to Deliver a People-Centric ‘Janata Budget’

SDPI Sets Pre-Budget Agenda for Karnataka, Demands ‘Janata Budget’ Focused on Social Justice

Raichur: With the Karnataka government set to present its 2026-27 state budget, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has staked its claim on the financial roadmap, urging the Siddaramaiah-led administration to present a true “Janata Budget” that prioritizes the welfare of marginalized communities .

At a press conference in Raichur, the party outlined a three-pronged development charter for the region, demanding immediate infrastructure and security enhancements. The SDPI is pushing for the swift sanction of a Ring Road project to mitigate rising traffic congestion and accident rates in the city. They are also advocating for the establishment of a Mega Textile Park and Cotton Hub, a move aimed at harnessing the region’s agricultural strength to generate substantial employment and drive socio-economic growth.

Security and Economic Demands for Raichur

A significant part of the party’s demand revolves around bolstering internal security. The SDPI has called for a dedicated budgetary allocation to establish the much-anticipated 13th Battalion of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) in Raichur .

The demand aligns with recent appeals made to the Chief Minister by the Karnataka State Police Complaints Authority (KSPCA), which highlighted the district’s strategic vulnerability. “Given the location of the Hutti Gold Mines, major thermal power stations, and the highest concentration of cotton ginning industries in the state, Raichur’s security infrastructure needs an urgent upgrade,” a party representative stated, echoing concerns about the current dependency on forces stationed nearly 180 kilometers away in Kalaburagi .

Broader Context of Budgetary Expectations

The SDPI’s appeal comes amid wider budgetary discussions where the state government is under pressure to address regional imbalances. Recent pre-budget meetings chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have indicated a potential increase in funds for backward taluks, based on the recommendations of the M. Govinda Rao Committee .

While the government has historically focused on its welfare guarantee schemes, the SDPI’s intervention specifically targets industrial and safety infrastructure. The proposed Mega Textile Park for Raichur taps into the central government’s PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM MITRA) scheme, under which Karnataka is already slated to host a major textile facility, potentially creating thousands of jobs .

Furthermore, the demand for a Ring Road in Raichur revives long-pending infrastructure promises previously mentioned in state budgets, which have often lacked immediate financial backing . The SDPI has emphasized that for the budget to be truly representative of the people, it must convert these longstanding proposals into tangible, funded projects in the 2026–27 fiscal plan.
