AM/NS India Clinches Historic Green Steel Certification, Pioneering Industry Shift

Bengaluru, February, 2026 – ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has etched its name as the nation’s first integrated steel producer to receive an official Green Steel certification under the Ministry of Steel’s newly established Green Steel Taxonomy. This landmark certification for its flagship flat steel products marks a significant leap in India’s industrial decarbonisation journey.

The company’s Hot Rolled (HR) coils and sheets achieved a four-star rating, while its Cold Rolled (CR) variants secured a three-star rating under the stringent government framework. The taxonomy mandates a production emissions intensity of less than 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel (tCO₂e/tfs), with star ratings ascending for lower emissions.

Rigorous Audit and Strategic Advantage

The certification followed a rigorous audit by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST). AM/NS India’s competitive edge stems from its production mix, where approximately 65% of its steelmaking uses the lower-carbon Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) route with natural gas. This has driven a more than 35% reduction in its carbon dioxide emissions intensity since 2015.

“India’s Green Steel Taxonomy sets a clear direction for the future,” said Mr. Dilip Oommen, CEO of AM/NS India. “The certification reflects our progress in this journey, underpinned by focused investments in low carbon processes and clean energy. It reinforces the important role steelmakers are playing in supporting national climate objectives while remaining globally competitive.”

Clean Energy Investments Fueling Transition

The company’s emissions profile is bolstered by substantial renewable energy integration. Its Hazira plant in Gujarat is already receiving clean power from a 1 GW hybrid renewable project in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The parent company, ArcelorMittal, announced plans in December 2025 to invest about USD 0.9 billion in three additional renewable projects across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, which will double its renewable capacity for AM/NS India to 2 GW.

Concurrently, AM/NS India is developing its own 550-MW hybrid renewable energy project in Bhachau, Gujarat, expected to save an estimated 0.9 million tonnes of CO₂ annually.

Market Impact and Future Goals

With commercial production of the certified green steel now underway, key sectors like automotive, infrastructure, and consumer durables gain access to a government-verified product that can reduce their Scope 3 supply chain emissions. This enhances both domestic industrial sustainability and India’s position as a competitive global steel producer.

Having already achieved emissions intensity 14% lower than the national average in FY25, AM/NS India has set a clear target: a 20% reduction in emissions intensity by 2030 from its 2021 baseline, signalling a firm commitment to a greener industrial future.
