Bangalore University Honour Recognizes Decades of Public Service and Legislative Leadership

Bengaluru, 27 November, 2025 – In a special ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan Banquet Hall today, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot presented an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree to U.T. Khader, the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The degree was conferred by Bangalore University as a highlight of its 60th Convocation celebrations.

The event recognized Speaker Khader’s extensive contributions to public life, politics, and society, marking a significant accolade for the senior legislator.

A Recognition of Scholarship and Service

In his ceremonial address, Governor Gehlot lauded Khader, framing the honorary doctorate as one of the highest forms of recognition for an individual’s contributions.

“Conferring the prestigious and honourable title of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) is the highest recognition of your scholarship and contributions to society, the state, and the nation,” Governor Gehlot stated. “This honour reflects your continuous work, creativity, and exceptional intellectual ability.”

The Governor emphasized that despite Khader’s political lineage, his distinction was self-earned. “Though you hail from a respected and popular political family, you have earned distinction through your personal commitment, simplicity, and constant engagement with the people.”

A Journey from Student Activism to the Speaker’s Chair

The Governor traced Khader’s political journey, noting his early involvement in social and youth organizations as a student. He highlighted how this foundation shaped Khader into a prominent figure in Karnataka’s political landscape.

“Emerging as a strong, sensitive, and credible leader in Karnataka politics, your five consecutive terms in the Legislative Assembly demonstrate the people’s trust and your sustained outreach,” Gehlot remarked.

A significant portion of the tribute focused on Khader’s current role as the custodian of the Legislative Assembly. The Governor praised his efforts in fostering a constructive parliamentary environment.

“As Speaker, you have championed a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and harmony. Through your conduct of Assembly proceedings, you have shown that despite differences of opinion, our commitment to the Constitution, democracy, and public welfare must remain steadfast.”

An Inspiration for Future Generations

Governor Gehlot underscored the broader significance of the university’s decision, stating that the honour goes beyond the individual to serve as a beacon for aspiring public servants.

“This degree awarded by Bangalore University recognizes your years of dedicated public service, administrative integrity, and multifaceted contributions to society,” he said. “This D.Litt. will inspire future generations, showing how work done with sincerity and perseverance can leave a deep and lasting impact.”

Concluding his address, the Governor extended his warm congratulations, adding, “May your experience and wisdom continue to guide society and serve the national interest in the days ahead.”

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Bangalore University Vice Chancellor Dr. Jayakar S.M., Registrar K.T. Shanthala, and Registrar of Evaluation Prof. C.S. Karigar, alongside other distinguished guests.
