Bengaluru: A workshop on the ongoing caste census was organized at Masjid e Taha, Bengaluru, to raise awareness among community members and encourage active participation. The initiative, led by religious and community leaders, sought to dispel misconceptions and highlight the significance of accurate representation in the survey for securing educational and social benefits.
Educating the Community
The Karnataka Backward Classes Commission is conducting a comprehensive social and educational census with nearly 60 questions, primarily focusing on economic and educational conditions. The workshop was convened by Moulana Asif Khan, Convener of Karnataka Muslim Mushawarat, who emphasized the urgency of creating awareness.
“Within just 24 hours, we managed to bring together elders, youth, and mosque committees for this vital session. The census is not an NRC or CCC; it is a scientific exercise to understand people’s needs. Our community must participate without fear,” Moulana Asif Khan said.

Dispelling Misconceptions
Speakers stressed that officials conducting the survey should be treated with respect and cooperation. The workshop highlighted that the census is not about exclusion but about ensuring fair representation of every community, including Muslims.
Samiullah Khan, President of Masjid e Taha Management Committee, noted, “Many people initially had doubts, but this dialogue clarified them. Cooperation with officials will strengthen our case for future educational and welfare programs.”

Significance for Muslim Sub-Castes
Discussions also brought attention to the Minority Department’s identification of 111 sub-castes within the Muslim community. Accurate declaration of sub-castes, leaders said, was crucial to secure recognition and pave the way for educational opportunities for children.
Mohammed Ahmed, President of Masjid e Islamabad, Basavanagudi, explained, “If we declare our sub-castes openly, it will help policymakers design better schemes. We must shed hesitation and ensure our diversity is recognized.”
Adding to this, community member Zakir Hussain remarked, “This is about empowerment through data. If we want justice and development, we need to present our reality honestly in the census.”

Call for Wider Outreach
The event saw active participation from senior members of the Baitul Maal Naujawan Committee and other local elders, with discussions continuing for over two hours. Organizers expressed joy over the turnout and called for similar workshops in other mosque areas to spread awareness further.
“This is just the beginning,” said Moulana Asif Khan. “We want every mosque to host such sessions so that no one is left uninformed.”
