Karnataka Government Will Protect Plural Culture, Ensure Welfare for All: CM

Compassion is the Core of Dharma: CM Siddaramaiah Reaffirms Commitment to Pluralism at St. Mary’s Feast

BENGALURU, Sept 8 – Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday declared his government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Karnataka’s pluralistic culture and ensuring the welfare of all citizens, particularly the poor, irrespective of caste or religion. The announcement was made during his address at the annual feast of the historic St. Mary’s Basilica Church in Shivajinagar.

Speaking to a diverse gathering, the Chief Minister anchored his administration’s philosophy in the timeless wisdom of 12th-century social reformer Basavanna. “Without compassion, there is no dharma. Compassion itself is the root of dharma,” Siddaramaiah stated, invoking the reformer’s teachings.

Constitutional Values Echo Ancient Wisdom

Expanding on this ideal, Siddaramaiah drew a direct line from Basavanna’s teachings to the foundational principles of modern India. He emphasized that the values of religious tolerance and social justice are not only spiritual imperatives but also central tenets of the Indian Constitution.

“The same values expressed by Basavanna were later upheld by Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Our government is committed to these values and will ensure equal protection for all,” he affirmed.

Government to Address Church’s Concerns

In a significant assurance, the Chief Minister pledged that his administration would respond positively to concerns raised during the event by Archbishop of Bengaluru, Peter Machado. While the specific details of the demands were not outlined in his public address, the commitment signals the government’s intent to engage in dialogue with community leaders.

The event was presided over by Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad. It was attended by Minister K.J. George, the Chief Minister’s Political Secretary Naseer Ahmed, and a number of other political and community leaders, underscoring the event’s significance.

The Chief Minister’s presence and pronouncements at one of Bengaluru’s most prominent Christian festivities are seen as a strong reaffirmation of his government’s dedication to secularism and inclusive development.
