A Walk Through the Independence Day Food Contest at Chef Couple Restaurant
By Payel Sengupta, Former Journalist & Rights Activist
Walking into the warm and vibrant ambience of Chef Couple Restaurant on Sarjapura Road, I was instantly reminded that celebrations of freedom can come in many flavors. This seven-year-old culinary space has found a truly unique way to honor India’s Independence Day—through history, food, and fun.

As I settled in, I was greeted with an unusual surprise: before enjoying the delicacies, every guest was asked a question from India’s freedom struggle—our Azadi ke pal. The catch? Answer it right, and your food is absolutely free!
My question was: “Who were Lal, Bal, Pal?” With pride, I replied—Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Bipin Chandra Pal. And yes, I earned a delicious treat on the house! 😍

The restaurant is buzzing with laughter, patriotic music, and thoughtful décor. Alongside the food contest, stalls displayed Khadi prod

ucts, books, Banjara jewellery, and handcrafted bags—reminding us how self-reliance and culture remain central to India’s spirit of freedom.
Chef Ravi and Chef Shelly, the passionate duo behind this initiative, believe that “food tastes better when served with purpose and pride.”
This special Independence Day contest continues for three more days. I urge everyone—families, food lovers, and history enthusiasts—to visit, participate, and relive the joy of India’s freedom struggle in the most unexpected yet heartwarming way.
