From Hazira to Himalayas: AM/NS India’s Steel Strengthens Chenab & Anji Khad Bridges

AM/NS India Fuels India’s Rail Revolution: Steel Behind Chenab and Anji Khad Bridges

Mumbai, June 7, 2025 – ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has played a pivotal role in India’s infrastructure transformation by supplying critical steel for two of the nation’s most ambitious railway projects—the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge.

The bridges, recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signify a major leap toward realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. These engineering marvels underscore India’s growing industrial prowess and commitment to cutting-edge infrastructure development.

Chenab Bridge: A Feat of Steel and Precision

AM/NS India supplied 25,000 metric tonnes of high-strength structural steel, meeting 70% of the Chenab Bridge’s total steel requirement. The steel, tailored for extreme altitudes and seismic conditions, included specialized grades for the arch, pillars, and other critical components—marking the first time such an extensive application was achieved in India.

Manufactured at AM/NS India’s Hazira facility, the steel underwent rigorous quality checks by third-party agencies to ensure durability, rust resistance, and structural integrity. “This project demanded precision at every stage, from production to delivery,” said a company spokesperson.

Anji Khad Bridge: 100% Steel Sourced Domestically

For the Anji Khad Bridge, AM/NS India supplied 7,000 metric tonnes of customized fabricated steel, fulfilling the entire requirement. The steel was designed to withstand unique environmental stresses, with fabrication largely completed in-house. Advanced quality control measures ensured longevity and resilience, reinforcing India’s capability to execute complex infrastructure projects with indigenous expertise.

Overcoming Challenges with Innovation

Executing these projects required meticulous planning and agile supply chain management. AM/NS India optimized production schedules, mitigated logistical hurdles, and collaborated closely with stakeholders to ensure seamless execution—particularly in the challenging terrain of Jammu & Kashmir.

A Testament to ‘Viksit Bharat’

Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice President (Sales & Marketing), AM/NS India, emphasized the project’s broader significance: “The Chenab and Anji Khad Bridges symbolize India’s self-reliance and industrial strength. Despite logistical challenges, we delivered world-class steel solutions, aligning with the nation’s development goals.”

He added, “By partnering with public and private stakeholders, we’re not just constructing bridges—we’re building a more resilient and prosperous India.”
