Preserve History, Empower Future Generations: Tehrik-e-Khudadaad Seeks Comprehensive Tipu Sultan Legacy Initiative
Kalaburagi: Tehrik-e-Khudadaad has submitted a memorandum to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking the restoration of the official state and district-level observance of Tipu Sultan Jayanti on November 10, along with a series of cultural, educational, scientific and economic initiatives to recognise the Mysore ruler’s historical contributions.
The memorandum, dated November 3, 2026, was submitted through the Deputy Commissioner of Kalaburagi by Mohammed Rafeeque Mulla, President of the organisation’s Hyderabad-Karnataka Region. Copies were also addressed to the Ministers for Kannada and Culture, School Education and Literacy, Higher Education, Science and Technology, IT and BT, and Minority Welfare.
Seeks restoration of official Tipu Jayanti
The organisation stated that Tipu Sultan Jayanti was introduced as an official government observance in 2015 during Siddaramaiah’s earlier tenure but was discontinued in 2019. It has urged the government to issue an appropriate order restoring the observance at state and district levels and communicate its decision before November 10, 2026.
The proposed programmes include historical lectures, exhibitions and student participation, with documented historical achievements presented alongside academic discussions.
Calls for review of school textbooks
The memorandum also seeks an expert-led review of textbook content relating to Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali. It proposes that the Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) and Karnataka Textbook Society compare Social Science textbooks for Classes 6, 7 and 10 across pre-2022, 2022-23, 2024-25 and current editions.
Qualified historians, educationists and teachers should examine content relating to the Anglo-Mysore Wars, rocket technology, administration, sericulture, manufacturing and trade. The organisation has called for correcting or restoring content wherever an expert review identifies unjustified omissions.
Eight proposals to recognise Tipu Sultan’s legacy
The memorandum proposes eight initiatives under a broader concept titled the “Tipu Sultan Legacy, Knowledge and Enterprise Initiative”. These include a heritage and science museum at Srirangapatna, a Taramandal Centre for Applied Science and Innovation, and initiatives in sericulture, advanced materials, Channapatna toys and crafts.
It also proposes an enterprise and export facilitation network for artisans and small businesses, an annual Tipu Sultan Innovation Challenge and fellowships, a multidisciplinary University of Applied Sciences, Design and Enterprise, and programmes for digitising archives, scholarships and public scholarship.
The proposed museum would document the Mysore kingdom, Anglo-Mysore Wars, rocket engineering, sericulture, crafts, commerce and archival records. The Taramandal Centre would support engineering demonstrations, robotics, electronics, aerospace history and student research, initially using existing colleges and laboratories.
Departments asked to examine proposals
The organisation has suggested involving the departments of Kannada and Culture, School Education and Literacy, Science and Technology, IT and BT, Higher Education, Sericulture, and Industries and Commerce.
It has requested separate concept notes, financial estimates, implementation plans and timelines from the concerned departments, along with the appointment of a nodal officer to monitor progress.
The memorandum notes that a decision on the November 10 observance can be taken immediately, while longer-term projects may undergo cabinet, budgetary, academic and statutory scrutiny.
“ A historically significant personality is honoured most meaningfully when commemoration also strengthens knowledge, craftsmanship, science and the economic opportunities of future generations,” the memorandum states, urging the government to consider the proposals as a lasting tribute rather than limiting recognition to a one-day observance.
