Bengaluru: Emphasising the importance of healthcare for religious scholars, the All India Milli Council Karnataka, in association with Shifa Hospital, organised a free cardiac care camp at Huda National School, Kavalbyrasandra, on November 1, coinciding with Karnataka Rajyotsava. More than 150 Islamic scholars (Ulema) and their family members underwent heart check-ups, received medical advice and prescriptions, and learned about preventive cardiac care.

The initiative, supported by Khidmat Boys and Huda International School, was aimed at addressing the health needs of Ulema, who often remain occupied with religious and community responsibilities while neglecting their own health.

Ulema’s Well-being a Community Responsibility

Mohammed Fiaz Sharief, General Secretary of Milli Council Karnataka, said the council decided to begin its healthcare initiatives by focusing on Ulema, recognising their role in guiding society and serving religious institutions.

He said the increasing incidence of heart attacks and cardiac ailments, including among younger people, made preventive health check-ups essential. The council considers caring for the health of religious scholars a social and moral responsibility and plans to continue such initiatives.

Sulaiman Khan, Assistant General Secretary of the All India Milli Council, said the camp received a positive response, with a large number of scholars visiting doctors for consultations and medical guidance.

He noted that many Ulema face financial constraints in accessing expensive medical services and that the initiative was intended to make essential healthcare accessible to them. The participants also expressed satisfaction with the arrangements and services provided.

Early Detection Can Save Lives

Dr. Zayd Ahmed, DM (Cardiology), Jayadeva Hospital, who was associated with the medical initiative, highlighted the importance of timely screening and preventive care. He observed that several participants were unaware of their underlying cardiac health concerns, underlining the need for regular medical examinations.

He also pointed to lifestyle-related factors contributing to heart disease and stressed the importance of medical advice, appropriate treatment and healthier lifestyle choices. He appreciated the Milli Council for organising the camp and creating awareness about cardiac health.

Ulema Welcome the Initiative

Moulana Mohammed Abdullah Qasmi, Moulana Shaikh Muneer Ahmed and Moulana Zaheeruddin Qadri were among the scholars who appreciated the initiative. They described the camp as a much-needed service, particularly considering the high cost of cardiac treatment, which many religious scholars may find difficult to afford.

They congratulated the Milli Council Karnataka and Shifa Hospital, offered prayers for the organisers and urged them to continue such welfare activities.

Expansion Plans Across Karnataka

Encouraged by the response, the Milli Council is planning to organise more cardiac care camps in different parts of Bengaluru before extending the initiative to other districts of Karnataka. Although the programme initially focuses on Ulema and their families, the council aims to eventually extend similar healthcare services to the wider public.

The organisers said the participation and blessings of Ulema would encourage them to take these service initiatives to more communities. The camp was described as a successful beginning towards making healthcare more accessible and building a healthier society.
