Urdu, Marathi Teacher Recruitment: Joint Action Committee, Solidarity Youth Movement Seek Immediate Government Intervention
Candidates protest reduction in promised vacancies
Bengaluru: The proposed recruitment of only 312 Urdu and Marathi-medium teachers, against the Karnataka government’s earlier assurance of 1,000 posts, has triggered renewed concern among thousands of eligible candidates. The Joint Action Committee and Solidarity Youth Movement Karnataka have urged the government to honour its commitment to recruit 800 Urdu and 200 Marathi-medium teachers.
Following strong demands from candidates and community organisations, the government had assured recruitment to the 1,000 posts, after which the candidates suspended their protest and awaited a fresh notification. However, the reported approval of only 312 posts has left candidates deeply disappointed.
Data highlights acute teacher shortage
According to figures cited by the organisations, Karnataka has 3,897 government Urdu-medium schools, with around 4,901 teacher vacancies, while approximately 3,04,206 students were enrolled in Urdu-medium education during the 2025-26 academic year. The organisations argued that approving just 312 posts would do little to address the shortage and could adversely affect both students and qualified job seekers.
A delegation representing the two organisations met Legislative Council Chairman Saleem Ahmed at Vidhana Soudha and sought his immediate intervention ahead of the Cabinet meeting.
The delegation urged him to take up the matter with the Chief Minister and press for approval of the original proposal for 800 Urdu and 200 Marathi-medium teachers. Saleem Ahmed assured the delegation that he would bring the issue to the Chief Minister’s notice and work towards an appropriate solution.
Former Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti also supported the candidates’ demand and appealed to the government to consider the issue seriously.
Leaders seek wider political support
The delegation also met Health and Family Welfare and Minority Welfare Minister U.T. Khader and Minister Rizwan Arshad, seeking their support for the recruitment demand.
The delegation acknowledged MLC Balqis Bano’s continued support, stating that she had raised the issue during Assembly proceedings, apprised the Chief Minister of the teacher shortage and played a key role in seeking approval for the 800 Urdu and 200 Marathi posts.
Joint Action Committee members Siraj Hanchagi, Mohammed Muzammil Haqui and Murtaza Kakbal, along with Solidarity Youth Movement Karnataka president Dr Naseem Ahmed, were among those present.
The organisations appealed to social and community bodies across Karnataka to unite and urge the government to issue the promised recruitment notification without further delay.
