Bengaluru: Residents of Kaval Byrasandra in Pulakeshinagar constituency have raised serious concerns over a decade-long garbage crisis that continues to plague their neighbourhood, despite repeated complaints to local legislators and civic authorities. The issue has now been formally escalated to the Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) by community representative Asif Khan, who has demanded immediate intervention and accountability.

A Health Hazard Beside a Women’s College and Cemetery

The garbage pile, located beside the Donnanna Nagar Cemetery (Smashan) and opposite the CMA PU College for Women, has become a chronic civic and public health menace, according to residents. The site, surrounded by houses and educational institutions, emits a foul stench and attracts stray animals and mosquitoes, creating unbearable conditions for the community.

“It’s shameful that in a city that aspires to global standards, a garbage dump has been festering for ten years right next to a women’s college,” said Asif Khan, who submitted the memorandum to the GBA on behalf of local residents. “The health of young students and residents is being jeopardized every single day, while authorities continue to look away.”

Neglect by Successive MLAs and Civic Apathy

The residents allege that both former MLA Akhanda Srinivasmurthy and current MLA AC Srinivas have failed to address the issue, despite being approached multiple times over the years. Locals also claim that several memorandums and calls to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials have gone unanswered.

“The BBMP engineers and local representatives have ignored this issue completely,” the complaint reads. “The apathy is appalling. Even the sanctity of the cemetery is being destroyed by the stinking piles of waste.”

Residents argue that this reflects not just bureaucratic neglect, but a deep civic indifference that undermines Bengaluru’s image as a modern urban hub. The lack of basic waste management, they say, exposes systemic inefficiency and disregard for citizens’ health and dignity.

Residents Demand Time-Bound Cleanup

The memorandum submitted to the GBA has called for immediate removal of the garbage and a time-bound restoration plan, insisting that the cleanup be completed within one to two weeks. It also urges the civic body to implement preventive measures to ensure the problem does not recur.

“If the issue is not resolved promptly,” Asif Khan warned, “we will be compelled to escalate the matter to the District In-Charge Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister, as this prolonged inaction cannot be tolerated anymore.”

Public Health and Civic Responsibility at Stake

The situation has drawn condemnation from civic activists who argue that such negligence violates fundamental civic rights. Public health experts warn that prolonged exposure to rotting waste can cause respiratory illnesses, vector-borne diseases, and mental distress among residents, particularly children and women students nearby.

The residents’ appeal to the GBA highlights a growing frustration with the city’s uneven waste management system and the failure of elected representatives to respond to grassroots grievances.
