Oral Cancer: An Alarming Health Challenge

A special address was delivered by Dr. Nadimul Hoda, Head of the Department of Oral Oncology at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru. Widely respected as one of the country’s leading oral onco-surgeons, Dr. Hoda presented a comprehensive overview of oral cancer, underscoring its rising incidence in Karnataka.

Every patient visiting a dentist must undergo a thorough examination of the oral cavity, not just treatment for a toothache or complaint,” Dr. Hoda stressed. He urged dentists to inquire about patients’ habits, particularly tobacco chewing, as it is one of the leading causes of oral cancer in India.

Highlighting the gravity of the issue, he added:
Early detection and referral to the right specialist can save countless lives. Unfortunately, late diagnosis remains the reason behind the high number of fatalities we see in India. The rising cases in Karnataka are an alarming signal, and we must act with urgency.

Compassion and Awareness in Cancer Treatment

Dr. Hoda also emphasized the importance of empathy in cancer care, reminding young doctors that cancer treatment must go beyond surgery and medication.

A cancer surgeon should approach the patient with compassion and empathy. Cancer destroys not just the individual but also affects entire families. It is our duty as citizens and as doctors to create awareness, educate people about the dangers of tobacco and gutkha, and promote early detection,” he said.

Concluding his address, Dr. Hoda shared a message of service and humility:
Cancer is curable if detected early. Service to humanity is service to God. Do good for others, and God will do good for you.
