Karnataka Govt Withdraws CID Probe into Police Role in Ranya Rao Gold Smuggling Case

The Karnataka government has abruptly withdrawn its directive for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the possible involvement of police officers at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport in the high-profile gold smuggling case linked to Kannada actress Ranya Rao. Instead, the matter is now under an internal inquiry led by Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta, with a specific focus on the alleged role of Ranya’s stepfather, senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao.

Background of the Case

On March 3, 2025, Ranya Rao was detained at the airport upon her arrival from Dubai. Authorities found 14.2 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately ₹12.56 crore, concealed on her person. Further searches at her residence led to the seizure of gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and ₹2.67 crore in cash, intensifying suspicions of a larger smuggling network.

Sudden Reversal of CID Probe

Initially, the Karnataka government had ordered a CID investigation into whether police personnel at the airport facilitated or ignored security breaches. However, within 24 hours, this order was unexpectedly withdrawn. Sources indicate that the reversal stemmed from concerns that a police constable, who allegedly provided an escort to Ranya at the airport, could reveal information implicating higher-ranking officials.

Focus on DGP K Ramachandra Rao

With the CID investigation called off, the focus has now shifted to an internal probe scrutinizing DGP K Ramachandra Rao, who currently serves as the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. Investigators are examining whether official security protocols were misused and whether he had any direct or indirect involvement in the smuggling operation.

Legal Proceedings and Bail Plea

Ranya Rao’s bail plea remains under judicial consideration, with a decision expected on March 14. Her legal team has argued that authorities did not adhere to proper procedures during her arrest and interrogation. However, investigators counter that granting bail could jeopardize the case, given the magnitude of the smuggling allegations.

Implications and Ongoing Investigations

This case has sparked widespread concerns over potential misuse of power and the integrity of law enforcement procedures. The final outcome of the internal inquiry and legal proceedings is expected to have significant ramifications for those involved and could shape future policies regarding high-profile smuggling cases in Karnataka
