Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar Pushes to Unlock Coast’s Potential with Unified Development Brand

Karnataka Ministers Mull ‘Brand Coastal Karnataka’ to Boost Regional Development

HEBBALKAR: TOURISM AND NRI INVESTMENTS KEY TO UNLOCKING REGION’S POTENTIAL

Bengaluru – In a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Karnataka government ministers emphasized the significant potential for holistic development in the state’s coastal belt, proposing the creation of a ‘Brand Coastal Karnataka’ to spearhead growth initiatives.

The meeting, held at the Vidhana Soudha on Friday and also attended by Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, focused on comprehensive strategies for the integrated development of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada districts.

Women and Child Development Minister and Udupi District In-charge Minister, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, spearheaded the proposition. She highlighted the region’s existing advantages and the need for a unified branding strategy.

“The coastal districts already have a conducive environment for development. We can develop these districts under the banner of ‘Brand Coastal Karnataka’,” Minister Hebbalkar stated. She pointed to the area’s rich cultural and spiritual capital as a primary growth engine. “There are numerous temples in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts which are conducive to tourism.”

Leveraging Diaspora for Economic Growth

A key part of the strategy involves tapping into the entrepreneurial spirit of the coastal diaspora. Minister Hebbalkar urged for policies that would encourage non-resident Indians (NRIs) from the region to invest back in their homeland.

“Industries originally from the coast who are now settled in other states should be incentivized to come and invest capital here. If this is achieved, we can witness comprehensive development within the next two to three years,” she elaborated.

High-Level Consensus for Coastal Progress

The meeting saw a strong show of unity and focus on the region’s development. It was attended by several key ministers including H.K. Patil and Dinesh Gundu Rao, legislators from the coastal districts, members of the legislative council, and senior government officials, signaling a concerted effort across political and administrative lines.

Analysis: A Unified Vision for a Vital Region

The ‘Brand Coastal Karnataka’ initiative represents a strategic shift from piecemeal projects to a cohesive, region-wide development model. By packaging the area’s unique strengths—its pilgrimage centers, pristine beaches, and educational hubs—under a single brand, the government aims to boost tourism and attract targeted investments. The focus on the NRI community is particularly astute, as it seeks to channel the well-established financial success and emotional connect of the coastal diaspora into tangible local projects, potentially accelerating job creation and infrastructure growth.
