Statewide Crackdown: Karnataka’s New Campaign Targets Drug Menace

Karnataka Launches Statewide “Drug-Free Karnataka” Campaign to Combat Substance Abuse

Two-Month Initiative Aims to Educate Communities Through SHGs and Public Engagement

Bengaluru, August 2, 2025 – In a concerted effort to tackle the rising menace of drug abuse, the National Livelihood Mission (NLM) has launched a comprehensive “Drug-Free Karnataka Campaign” across the state. The two-month initiative, running from August 1 to September 30, 2025, seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse through community-driven programs, with a special focus on women’s self-help groups (SHGs).

The campaign, implemented under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana, brings together multiple government departments to address the social, economic, and health consequences of drug addiction. P.I. Sreevidya, Director of NLM (under the Department of Skill Development), highlighted the importance of public participation in curbing drug abuse.

“Every member of society must understand the devastating impact of drug addiction and commit to a drug-free life,” Sreevidya said. “Through this campaign, we aim to build healthier, safer communities by leveraging the reach of self-help groups and grassroots awareness programs.”

Grassroots Awareness Through SHGs and Local Bodies

A key feature of the campaign is its bottom-up approach, with activities planned at district, taluk, gram panchayat, and ward levels. Women’s SHGs will play a pivotal role in spreading awareness through various mediums, including:

  • Street plays and awareness rallies

  • Educational workshops and expert lectures

  • Distribution of pamphlets and posters

  • Social media and digital campaigns

  • Health counseling sessions

  • Short film screenings on addiction

  • Pledge-taking ceremonies to reinforce commitment against drugs

The initiative also seeks to educate communities about the link between drug abuse and increased violence, financial instability, and family breakdowns.

A Multi-Departmental Effort for a Drug-Free Future

The campaign emphasizes collaboration across government departments, ensuring a unified strategy to combat substance abuse. By engaging local administrations, schools, and youth groups, the program aims to foster long-term behavioral change.

“Our goal is not just awareness but action,” Sreevidya added. “When communities unite against drugs, we can create a lasting impact.”

As Karnataka takes a firm stand against narcotics, the “Drug-Free Karnataka Campaign” sets a precedent for community-led interventions in public health and social welfare. With widespread participation, the state hopes to pave the way for a safer, drug-free future.
