AM/NS India Commissions First-of-its-Kind High-Strength Steel Galvanising Line for Automotive Sector
Cutting-Edge Facility to Boost Domestic Production of Advanced Automotive Steel
Bengaluru, [Date]: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has commissioned a state-of-the-art Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) at its flagship plant, marking a significant milestone in India’s steel industry. The new facility is the first in the country capable of producing Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) with strength levels up to 1180 megapascals (MPa), positioning AM/NS India as a key player in meeting the automotive sector’s demand for high-performance, lightweight, and safety-compliant steel.
The CGL will manufacture Galvanised (GI) and Galvannealed (GA) coated steel products, incorporating patented technologies from parent companies ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. These high-grade steels will enhance vehicle safety, fuel efficiency, and recyclability—critical factors as India prepares for stricter Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) Phase III norms, set to take effect in April 2027.
A Strategic Leap in India’s Steel Expansion
The new CGL is part of AM/NS India’s ₹60,000-crore expansion plan, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022, aimed at boosting production capacity across diverse steel grades. The project underscores the company’s commitment to reducing India’s reliance on imported high-strength steel while supporting the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.
Dilip Oommen, CEO, AM/NS India, said, *“The commissioning of this first-of-its-kind Continuous Galvanising Line marks another defining moment in our expansion journey. Our new line is designed to produce steel that matches the quality available in developed nations, reinforcing our commitment to India’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’.”*
He added, “With support from our parent companies, we are setting new benchmarks in steel production. The indigenous manufacturing of the highest-strength steel in India will significantly contribute to the nation’s self-reliance goals.”
Bridging the Gap in High-End Steel Production
The automotive sector has traditionally depended on imports for specialized high-strength steel. AM/NS India’s new CGL aims to bridge this gap by offering import-substitute products, enhancing India’s global competitiveness. The facility aligns with the government’s push for downstream steel production, supported by initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
By producing lightweight, high-formability, and corrosion-resistant steel, the CGL will cater to evolving automotive needs, including electric vehicles (EVs) and next-generation mobility solutions. The move also supports sustainability goals by promoting recyclable materials and reducing carbon footprints in vehicle manufacturing.
Strengthening India’s Steel Ecosystem
The commissioning of the CGL reinforces AM/NS India’s leadership in value-added steel products, furthering India’s transition to advanced manufacturing capabilities. As the country moves towards emission norms and fuel efficiency standards, the availability of domestically produced high-strength steel will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the automotive industry.
With this milestone, AM/NS India is not only enhancing its product portfolio but also contributing to a self-reliant, globally competitive steel ecosystem in India.
