Karnataka Unveils Action Plan for New Bio-Energy Policy to Boost Sustainable Energy
State Aims to Prioritize Bio-Energy, Reduce Carbon Footprint
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is set to roll out an ambitious *New Bio-Energy Policy (2025–30)*, with an action plan currently in the works to accelerate adoption across the state. S.E. Sudheendra, Chairman of the Karnataka Bio-Energy Development Board, announced the move during the 42nd Executive Committee Meeting, emphasizing the policy’s role in fostering an eco-friendly energy ecosystem.
“Steps are being taken to ensure bio-energy becomes a priority for all stakeholders in the coming days,” Sudheendra stated, adding that a comprehensive strategy is being finalized for effective implementation. The meeting also saw the presentation of the Board’s Annual Report for 2024–25, outlining progress and future goals.
Bio-Energy: A Key Player in Karnataka’s Green Transition
Executive Committee member K. Krishnan highlighted the global trends in bio-energy production, supply, and demand during a detailed presentation. He underscored the potential of bio-briquettes, bio-pellets, compressed biogas, and biomass-based green hydrogen in meeting electricity needs for local authorities and the automobile sector.
“These bio-energy forms are not just sustainable but also crucial for reducing dependency on fossil fuels,” Krishnan noted.
Sub-Committee to Oversee Biodiesel Production
To strengthen biodiesel production, Sudheendra directed the formation of a sub-committee to streamline the collection of key oilseeds—Honge, Neem, and Hippe Seemarooba—essential for feedstock. This initiative aims to enhance supply chains and ensure consistent raw material availability for biofuel projects.
Stakeholders Collaborate for Policy Success
The meeting saw participation from key officials, including Managing Director Shivashankar L., Deputy Secretary (Rural Development & Panchayat Raj) M.M. Raju, and representatives from the Forest Department, KSRTC, and KSCST. Technical advisors and experts also contributed insights on scaling up bio-energy infrastructure.
With Karnataka taking decisive steps toward a greener future, the New Bio-Energy Policy is poised to play a pivotal role in India’s renewable energy transition—balancing ecological sustainability with growing energy demands.
