Empowering Women Behind the Wheel: Bengaluru Launches Free Auto-Rickshaw Training Initiative

Driving Change: Free Training Program Aims to Boost Women Auto Drivers in Bengaluru

“Breaking Stereotypes, One Ride at a Time: Bengaluru’s New Initiative Trains Women Auto Drivers”

MLA Suresh Kumar Champions Gender Equality in Public Transport

BENGALURU, April 7, 2025 — In a progressive step toward safer and more inclusive urban mobility, a free auto-rickshaw driving training program for women was unveiled today in Rajajinagar, backed by MLA Suresh Kumar and spearheaded by the Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC) in partnership with Adarsha Auto Union.

The initiative seeks to break gender barriers in Bengaluru’s transport sector by equipping women with professional driving skills, fostering economic independence, and enhancing safety for female commuters.

“When Women Drive, Cities Become Safer”

At the launch event, MLA Suresh Kumar emphasized the transformative potential of women entering the auto-driving profession.

“Increasing the number of women auto drivers will make Bengaluru’s streets more secure and welcoming for all,” Kumar said. “This initiative is not just about employment—it’s about reshaping our city’s mobility culture.”

His sentiments were reinforced by B.PAC representatives, including Ms. Mimi Parthasarathy, Ms. Anisha Bandary, and trainer Ms. Prabhavathi, who highlighted the dual benefits of economic empowerment and safer public transport.

Driving Change in a Male-Dominated Industry

With women making up a small fraction of Bengaluru’s auto-rickshaw drivers, the program aims to challenge stereotypes and create new opportunities in a sector long dominated by men. By providing hands-on training and mentorship, the initiative hopes to inspire more women to take the driver’s seat—literally and figuratively.

Beyond skill development, the project envisions a future where women feel confident navigating the city—both as drivers and passengers. As more female auto-rickshaw operators hit the roads, the organizers believe Bengaluru will set a powerful example for gender-inclusive urban transport nationwide.
