VTU Issues Stern Directive to Protect Sanctity of Kannada Across 220 Colleges
Bengaluru – Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has issued a comprehensive mandate to all affiliated institutions, reinforcing the mandatory respect for Kannada as the state’s administrative and cultural lifeline. The directive serves as a firm reminder that any disparagement of the language, literature, or culture within academic spaces will face strict disciplinary consequences.
As the official language of Karnataka with deep-seated constitutional and legal standing, Kannada holds a primary position in the state’s educational framework. VTU’s latest move aims to formalize the duty of colleges to preserve this heritage, ensuring that campus environments remain inclusive yet firmly rooted in local identity.

A Preemptive Strike Against Workplace Misconduct
The university’s decision comes in response to specific, though undisclosed, “unpleasant incidents” that have reportedly occurred within some institutions. Rather than reacting to a crisis, the university is opting for a preventative approach to maintain linguistic harmony.
VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Vidyashankar emphasized the university’s diverse demographic as a key reason for the clear guidelines.
“Kannada is the language of our land. It is everyone’s responsibility to show respect to it,” Prof. Vidyashankar stated. “VTU has 220 affiliated colleges with 3 lakh students, including students from different states and countries. We are ensuring that Kannada is not disrespected. However, since some unpleasant incidents have occurred, we have issued precautionary guidelines to prevent such situations.”
Accountability for Leadership and Staff
The directive places the burden of implementation directly on the shoulders of college heads. Principals and administrators are now personally responsible for monitoring the linguistic conduct of their departments.
The guidelines explicitly prohibit both teaching and non-teaching staff from using “derogatory or inappropriate words” regarding Kannada when interacting with students, colleagues, or the public. Key features of the directive include:
-
Zero Tolerance: Any confirmed violation will result in immediate disciplinary action against the offending staff member.
-
Mandatory Briefings: College administrations must immediately sensitize all employees regarding these guidelines.
-
Promoting Harmony: Beyond enforcement, institutions are encouraged to foster an environment where linguistic diversity coexists with a fundamental respect for the local culture.
Context and Analysis
The move by VTU reflects a broader trend in Karnataka to solidify the role of the state language in professional and academic spheres. By targeting “derogatory” speech, the university is addressing a sensitive intersection of regional pride and academic professionalism.
For a university system that hosts a significant population of non-local students and faculty, these guidelines serve as a cultural roadmap. While the university promotes a global educational standard, this directive ensures that such progress does not come at the cost of the state’s linguistic dignity.
