INC Leader Y. Sayeed Ahmed: ‘Waqf Belongs to the People, and I Will Not Rest Until It’s Protected’

“Why only Waqf? If this is about transparency, let it begin with all religious trusts.”: KPCC Vice President Questions BJP’s Amendment Act

Veteran Congress leader Y. Sayeed Ahmed voices concern over proposed changes to Waqf governance, calls for unity and justice

Bengaluru, India — In a sharp critique of the BJP-led central government, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Vice President Y. Sayeed Ahmed has condemned the Waqf Amendment Act, calling it “an attack” on minority institutions and a threat to the autonomy of community-driven service bodies.

With over four decades of service to the Congress Party and the people of Karnataka, Ahmed expressed deep concern about the implications of the Act. He emphasized the transformative role Waqf institutions have played in the lives of the underprivileged, particularly within the Muslim community.

“I have walked through Waqf-funded schools, orphanages, hospitals, and shelters—places that have uplifted countless lives,” Ahmed said. “Waqf has been a lifeline for orphans, widows, and students with dreams.”

The proposed amendments, he argued, are not aimed at reform but at control. He questioned the government’s selective focus on Muslim institutions while leaving other religious bodies untouched. “If the core purpose is better governance, then why not bring similar changes to temple boards, church trusts, and other religious bodies?” he asked.

Ahmed welcomed the recent Supreme Court decision to stay the implementation of the Act, applauding the judiciary’s intervention and its critical observations about the bill’s fairness.

Calling for a peaceful and united response from the community, he invoked the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. “Let us respond with unity, peace, and resolve. We will fight this injustice, but we will do so with dignity,” he stated.

Reaffirming his commitment to defending the rights of the community, Ahmed concluded with a resolute message: “Waqf belongs to the people. And I will not rest until it is protected.

Quotes of Y Sayeed Ahmed:

  1. “Waqf has been a lifeline for orphans, widows, and students. Its spirit must not be compromised.”

  2. “The Waqf Amendment Act is not reform—it’s a calculated move to seize community autonomy.”

  3. “Why only Waqf? If this is about transparency, let it begin with all religious trusts.”

  4. “Our resistance will be peaceful, our voice united, and our resolve unshaken.”

  5. “Waqf institutions are not just buildings—they are the backbone of support for the marginalized.”
