Celebrating Harmony: S.K. Kareem Khan Sauharda & Amrita Kavya Awards Conferred

S.K. Kareem Khan Harmony and Amrita Kavya Awards Conferred in Sakleshpur

Sakleshpur: In a grand celebration of literary and social contributions, the prestigious S.K. Kareem Khan Harmony Award was conferred upon Parashuram for his remarkable efforts in fostering social unity. Additionally, the Amrita Kavya Award was presented to young writers Vishal Mansar and Sanghamitre Nagaraghatta, recognizing their literary excellence.

The award ceremony, hosted by Jai Karnataka Sangha, took place at the Poornachandra Tejaswi Open-Air Theatre in Rakshidi on Saturday evening. The event witnessed an assembly of distinguished literary figures, activists, and dignitaries, all united in their commitment to preserving and promoting Kannada literature and cultural harmony.

A Call for Unity and Intellectual Integrity

Senior journalist Raghunath C.H. expressed concerns about the increasing divisions in society based on ideology, caste, and status. He emphasized the historical role of Kannada literature in guiding society and lamented that today, even a writer’s credibility is questioned. Quoting renowned poet Lankesh, he said, “Instead of seeking personal recognition, we must focus on what truly benefits society.” He also praised Jai Karnataka Sangha for its quiet yet impactful contributions, contrasting them with institutions that claim to safeguard culture while merely seeking government aid.

Former MLA H.M. Vishwanath highlighted plans to develop Poornachandra Tejaswi Open-Air Theatre into a model cultural hub. He revealed ongoing discussions about installing a statue of Kuvempu, the legendary Kannada poet, at the venue. Speaking on simplicity in life, he reminisced about his own modest wedding held during Rahu Kaal, inspired by Kuvempu’s principles, and urged society to adopt similar pragmatic values instead of extravagant, debt-driven weddings.

The Importance of Education and Multilingualism

Veteran theatre artist H.R. Swami underscored the importance of instilling a reading culture in children, referencing S.K. Kareem Khan’s legacy of simplicity, friendship, and love for learning. He noted with concern that while parents spend time on mobile phones and television serials, they fail to encourage their children to read and learn multiple languages.

Theatre artist Prasad Rakshidi shed light on S.K. Kareem Khan’s ancestry, tracing his father’s migration from Afghanistan to the serene landscapes of Sakleshpur, where they eventually settled and made significant contributions to society.

A Platform for Literary and Social Enlightenment

Poet Subbu Holeyar eloquently described the awards ceremony as not just an event of recognition but a powerful platform for literature, theatre, and social awareness. He asserted, “Honoring individuals dedicated to true harmony is a moral responsibility.”

The event also saw participation from notable literary and cultural figures including Hettur Nagaraj, Manju Banavasi, Radhe Rakshidi, Kavita Subbiah, B.R. Venkataramana Aithal, Tanveer Khan (nephew of Kareem Khan), Tausif Ahmed (his son-in-law), and Karnataka Sahitya Parishat President Sharada Gurumurthy.

The evening was a heartfelt tribute to the enduring spirit of Kannada literature, social unity, and cultural legacy—values that S.K. Kareem Khan himself championed throughout his lifetime.
