Breaking Barriers: Women Unite for Health Awareness on International Women’s Day
BANGALORE: In a powerful initiative to promote women’s health and well-being, Altius Hospital organized the third edition of the “Women’s Akathon”—a special walkathon held in celebration of International Women’s Day. The event, which saw the enthusiastic participation of over 1,500 women, aimed to raise awareness about critical health issues affecting women and emphasize the importance of self-care.
The walkathon commenced at 6 AM from KBC Basketball Court in Kalyan Nagar, with leading obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Priya S. P. Patil spearheading the movement. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Patil stressed the alarming trend of women neglecting their health due to family responsibilities.
“Studies show that nearly 70% of women do not prioritize their own health, leading to serious consequences. It is essential that women set aside time for their well-being, alongside their family responsibilities. A balanced diet and regular physical exercise are key to a healthier life,” she stated.

Dr. Patil also highlighted the dangers of diseases such as endometriosis and cervical cancer, urging women to take proactive steps towards prevention. “Cervical cancer is one of the deadliest diseases affecting women, but the good news is that a vaccine is now available to prevent it. I encourage all women to take advantage of this life-saving measure,” she added.
Dr. Lakshmi Rupesh, Director of Dental Den, lauded the overwhelming response to this year’s walkathon, emphasizing its role in spreading awareness. “Every year, we celebrate Women’s Day by addressing key health concerns. The participation of over 1,500 women today reflects the growing awareness and commitment to self-care,” she remarked.
The Women’s Akathon 2024 successfully underscored the message that women’s health is not just a personal responsibility but a societal priority. The organizers hope that such initiatives will continue to inspire women to prioritize their well-being and adopt healthier lifestyles.
