Karnataka Minister Launches Scathing Attack on Modi Govt Over Farmers’ Woes, Debt in Legislative Council
December 9
BELAGAVI: In a fiery speech at the Karnataka Legislative Council on Friday, Labour Minister and Dharwad District In-charge Santosh Lad launched a broadside against the BJP-led central government, accusing it of failing farmers and pushing the nation deeper into debt. His remarks came during a discussion on ethanol blending and sparked a sharp political confrontation within the House.
The minister’s critique centered on what he termed the unfulfilled promise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to double farmers’ income. “When Modi came to power, he said he would double farmers’ income. So many years have passed since he came to power, but the problems of the annadatas (food providers) remain unresolved. The hardships of the country’s farmers have not ended,” Lad stated, setting a combative tone for his address.

He was responding to BJP MLC C.T. Ravi’s comments on ethanol allocation. Lad dismissed the Centre’s claims on farmer welfare, asserting, “They have done nothing as Prime Minister Modi had said. The income of farmers across the country has not increased. Their problems persist.”
Silence on Karnataka & Soaring National Debt Questioned
Expanding his attack, Lad questioned the silence of BJP parliamentarians from Karnataka on issues critical to the state and highlighted the country’s escalating debt. “The debt in the country has increased tenfold. No one from the BJP raises their voice about this. They only speak about what is convenient for them,” he alleged.

Challenging the BJP members directly, Lad demanded, “If there is an issue, let them speak. The government will answer. BJP MPs do not raise their voice in Parliament about Karnataka. Tell us, who has spoken in the last eleven years?”
“No Room for Vague Answers,” Says Lad
The minister insisted on clarity over the BJP’s claims of having increased allocations “tenfold” and criticized evasive responses. “They should give a clarification about claims that the BJP government gave ten times more. One cannot give vague answers and speak whatever comes to mind,” Lad retorted, taking a swipe at his political opponents.
His comments underscore the ongoing political friction in the state legislature, where the ruling Congress and opposition BJP are locked in a continuous battle over the performance and promises of the central government, particularly concerning agrarian distress and fiscal management.
