Karnataka Launches Day Care Chemotherapy Centers in Government Hospitals

Bengaluru, May 2024 – In a landmark move to enhance cancer care accessibility, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced the launch of Day Care Chemotherapy centers in government hospitals across the state. The initiative, set to begin this month, aims to provide affordable and convenient treatment for cancer patients, reducing the need for prolonged hospital stays.

Expanding Access to Affordable Cancer Care

Speaking at the inauguration of Sparsh Hospital’s 300-bed quaternary care facility in Hennur, Minister Rao emphasized the government’s commitment to community healthcare.

“Government hospitals operate with the motto of serving all sections of society. While we do not compete with private super-specialty hospitals, our focus is on ensuring that essential treatments like chemotherapy are accessible to everyone,” Rao said.

The first center will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Mysuru on May 23, with plans to extend the service to all district hospitals in Karnataka.

Reducing Costs Through Innovation & Research

The Health Minister highlighted the importance of research and development (R&D) in making advanced treatments more affordable.

“A few years ago, MRI and CT scans were prohibitively expensive. Today, they are far more accessible. Similarly, we must invest in R&D to bring down the cost of cancer care,” Rao noted. He urged private hospitals to contribute more to medical research to benefit patients across economic backgrounds.

Bengaluru Emerges as a Leading Medical Hub

Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil, who also attended the event, praised Bengaluru’s growth as a global healthcare destination.

“Bengaluru is now a hub for world-class medical facilities. Karnataka produces the highest number of doctors in India, with many serving across the globe,” Dr. Patil said.

  • Robotic-assisted surgeries
