High Demand for Karnataka Minority Residential Schools: 56,000 Applicants Vie for 11,300 Seats

“Free Coaching, 100% Support: How Karnataka’s Minority Schools Are Changing Lives”

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Minority Residential Schools are witnessing an unprecedented surge in admissions, with over 56,000 students applying for just 11,300 available seats in 6th Standard this year—a significant jump from last year’s 40,000 applications.

The overwhelming demand, officials say, stems from the schools’ stellar academic track record, with a 98% pass rate in PUC (12th Grade) and 93% in SSLC (10th Grade) last year—99% of whom secured First Class marks.

Why the Rush?

Jeelani Mokashi, Director of the Directorate of Minorities, attributes the rising interest to the schools’ free, high-quality education—covering tuition, food, accommodation, uniforms, and study materials—alongside specialized coaching for competitive exams like NEET, JEE, CA, and CLAT.

“Families, especially from rural and economically weaker backgrounds, trust our system because we don’t just educate—we nurture,” Mokashi said. “Our students thrive in a structured environment with doubt-clearing sessions, mock tests, and skilled teachers.”

Expansion Plans Amid Growing Need

Currently, Karnataka has 166 Minority Residential Schools, with 25 more slated to open this year. However, with applications far outstripping seats, Mokashi revealed plans to seek additional funds from the state government to expand capacity.

Each school operates on sprawling 7–10-acre campuses, featuring hostels, staff quarters, and academic blocks. The institutions cater primarily to minority communities (Muslims, Christians, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis), with 25% of seats reserved for SC, ST, and OBC students.

Beyond Academics: A Holistic Approach

To maintain high standards, the department conducts regular teacher training programs and has introduced the CBSE syllabus in 29 schools. “Our integrated model—combining academics, competitive exam prep, and mentorship—is delivering results,” Mokashi added.

With demand soaring, Karnataka’s Minority Residential Schools are fast becoming a beacon of accessible, excellence-driven education for underprivileged students.
