“Eco-Friendly Repair Vans: BMTC’s New Weapon Against Traffic Snarls”
New fleet aims to curb traffic snarls and improve commuter experience
Bengaluru, March 24, 2025 – In a bid to tackle the perennial issue of bus breakdowns and the resulting traffic chaos, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced five state-of-the-art Mobile Repair Vans. This move is part of a broader strategy to streamline public transport operations and ensure smoother commutes for the city’s residents.
With a fleet of 6,835 buses crisscrossing the city and its suburbs daily, BMTC is no stranger to the challenges posed by Bengaluru’s notorious traffic. Even a single stalled bus can trigger a ripple effect, causing long delays and gridlock. To address this, the transport corporation has strategically positioned these repair vans at key transit hubs, including Marathahalli and Kempegowda Bus Station (KBS), with plans to expand coverage to high-traffic areas like Shivajinagar, Yeshwanthpur, and Silk Board.
Green Machines on Wheels
The new vans, Dost Strong-LS models from Ashok Leyland, are not just efficient but also eco-friendly, adhering to the stringent BS-VI emission standards. Designed to handle on-the-spot repairs, these vans come equipped with a 1.4-ton payload capacity, advanced tracking systems, and a panic button for emergencies. Their ergonomic design and spacious interiors house everything from hydraulic jacks to heavy-duty toolboxes, ensuring that repair crews can respond swiftly to breakdowns.
Celebrating Heroes on and off the Road
The launch event also served as a platform to honor BMTC employees who have gone above and beyond in their roles. Among them were Mr. Vinaykumar V and Mr. Shashidhar V.D., who represented India in the Qatar International Kabaddi Championship 2025. Their stellar performance helped the Indian team clinch victory, defeating Qatar in a thrilling final.
In a heartwarming moment, Conductor Mrs. Muniratnamma and Driver Mr. Kumar A.M. were recognized for their quick thinking and bravery. On March 10, while on duty, Mrs. Muniratnamma spotted a passenger attempting to steal a mobile phone. She promptly alerted fellow passengers and directed the driver to the nearest police station, ensuring the culprit was apprehended. Their actions underscored BMTC’s commitment to passenger safety.
A Step Toward a Smoother Commute
The introduction of the Mobile Repair Vans marks a significant step forward in BMTC’s ongoing efforts to improve public transport services. By reducing breakdown-related delays and honoring the dedication of its staff, the corporation is reinforcing its pledge to provide a safer, more reliable commute for Bengaluru’s residents.
Speaking at the event, Ramalinga Reddy, Minister for Transport, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “The deployment of these Mobile Repair Vans is a testament to our commitment to enhancing public transport efficiency and reducing traffic disruptions. We are dedicated to ensuring that Bengaluru’s commuters experience a seamless and safe journey,” he said.
Reddy also praised the BMTC staff for their exceptional contributions. “The bravery of Mrs. Muniratnamma and Mr. Kumar, as well as the achievements of our kabaddi champions, remind us that BMTC is not just about buses—it’s about the people who make this system work. Their dedication inspires us to strive for excellence in public service,” he added.
As the city continues to grapple with traffic woes, initiatives like these offer a glimmer of hope for a more efficient urban transit system.
