BJP MLA’s Vulgar Remarks Spark Outrage Amid Gold Smuggling Probe

Controversial Comments Target Kannada Actor Ranya Rao

Bengaluru: Basangouda Patil Yatnal, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Bijapur City, has stirred a fresh controversy with vulgar remarks targeting Kannada actor Ranya Rao, who is under investigation for allegedly smuggling 14 kg of gold. Yatnal, known for his provocative statements, made the comments during a press interaction, claiming knowledge of ministers involved in the case and using crude language to describe the smuggling attempt.

Ranya Rao was arrested two weeks ago at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport after customs officials discovered gold bars concealed in her clothing. Preliminary investigations suggest possible collusion with airport staff, raising questions about security lapses.

MLA’s Crass Remarks Draw Condemnation
In a video that has since gone viral, Yatnal is heard saying in Kannada, “She (Ranya Rao) had gold all over her body, hiding it wherever she had holes, and smuggled it in.” He further claimed to have gathered information about her connections and promised to expose the alleged involvement of ministers during the upcoming assembly session. “I will reveal everything, including which hole she hid the gold in,” he added.

The remarks have drawn widespread criticism for their misogynistic tone, with many calling them disrespectful and inappropriate for a public representative.

Political Fallout and Past Controversies
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has dismissed claims of ministerial involvement as “political gossip.” Meanwhile, Yatnal’s history of controversial statements continues to haunt him. In 2023, he was issued a notice by the Election Commission for calling Congress leader Sonia Gandhi “vishkanya.” He has also faced backlash for his remarks on minority welfare schemes and for labeling a freedom fighter a “Pakistani agent.”

DGP-Level Officer Sent on Leave
The case took another turn when Ramachandra Rao, a senior IPS officer and stepfather of Ranya Rao, was sent on “compulsory leave” days after her arrest. Rao had denied any involvement in the gold seizure, but the move has raised eyebrows.

As the investigation unfolds, Yatnal’s remarks have overshadowed the case, highlighting the need for accountability and decency in public discourse.
