Milli Council Karnataka Launches Statewide Campaign to Highlight Muslims’ Role in Freedom Struggle

Independence Day programmes, public conference, blood donation drives and medical camps planned to promote historical awareness and communal harmony

Bengaluru, 12 August 2026: The All India Milli Council Karnataka on Wednesday announced a statewide public awareness campaign to highlight the contributions and sacrifices of Muslims in India’s freedom struggle and nation-building, while raising concern over what it described as attempts to distort or erase parts of the country’s history.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Council representatives said younger generations must have access to an accurate and inclusive account of the freedom movement. They warned that neglecting historical facts could allow communal narratives to deepen divisions.

“The freedom struggle belonged to Indians of every faith. Muslims made immense sacrifices for independence, and those contributions must be honestly presented to future generations,” said Sulaiman Khan, Assistant General Secretary, All India Milli Council.

Independence Day Outreach Through Mosques

As part of the campaign, mosque committees across Karnataka have been encouraged to organise Independence Day programmes on August 15 at nearby grounds or suitable public venues. Local residents and leaders from other communities will also be invited to encourage interaction and national unity.

The programmes will highlight the role of Muslims in the freedom movement and explain the National Flag Code to prevent misunderstanding or misuse during celebrations.

In the first phase, selected mosque committees in Bengaluru will receive national flags along with literature explaining proper flag protocol.

“Our message is positive and inclusive. Let mosques and community organisations become platforms for spreading awareness about our shared history, constitutional values and unity,” said Mohammed Fiaz Sharief, Convenor, Milli Council Karnataka.

Conference on Unity in Freedom Movement

Towards the end of August, the Council plans to organise a major conference titled “The Spirit of Unity in the Freedom Movement”, bringing together Islamic scholars, historians, intellectuals and public figures to discuss India’s shared struggle for independence.

Blood Donation and Medical Camps Planned

The campaign will also include blood donation drives and free medical camps at key locations in Bengaluru as a tribute to freedom fighters and an expression of service to humanity.

“Remembering our freedom fighters should inspire us to serve society today. Blood donation, healthcare and community service are meaningful ways of carrying their spirit forward,” Sharief said.

The Milli Council appealed to journalists, media organisations and citizens to support the fact-based awareness initiative and help strengthen national unity, social harmony and respect for India’s diverse history.
