A mega protest rally is underway at Bengaluru’s Freedom Park to voice sharp opposition against the exercise, which activists allege is a targeted conspiracy to disenfranchise vulnerable communities.

The demonstration follows a successful statewide mobilization campaign. Speaking at a joint press conference on Friday, prominent activists—including former Minister B.T. Lalitha Naik, Karnataka Janashakti State President Noor Sridhar, J.M. Veerasangaiah of the Raitha Sangha, and representatives from ‘Eddelu Karnataka’ and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind—declared that the protest serves as a direct challenge to both the state government and the Election Commission.

Statewide Mobilization Ahead of the Rally |

The Freedom Park rally marks the culmination of a week-long statewide awareness campaign launched on June 13. Organized in collaboration with ‘Eddelu Karnataka,’ the campaign spanned five distinct routes, covering every taluk center across the state.

Over the course of the week, organizers conducted more than 170 awareness programs to educate citizens on what they describe as the hidden dangers of the SIR process. According to the organizers, public response has been overwhelming, with citizens increasingly recognizing the underlying political maneuvers behind the revision.

High-Profile Leaders Join the Resistance

The protest has drawn significant support from across political, social, and religious spectrums. More than 230 cultural, social, and political dignitaries are participating in Saturday’s mega convention.

Prominent interfaith religious leaders, including Dr. Shivacharya Shivamurthy Swami, Reverend Peter Machado, R.T. Reverend BP Susainathan, Maitreyi Mataji, Baljit Singh, and Maulana Zulfiqar Noori, are in attendance to represent the state’s pluralistic fabric. The rally is also seeing high-profile political participation, with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Home Minister Priyank Kharge slated to attend alongside other state representatives.

During the convention, the coalition plans to formally present a manifesto comprising six critical questions and four distinct proposals to the Election Commission, alongside a list of five urgent executive measures required from the state government to safeguard voting rights.

Fears of Mass Disenfranchisement

The primary grievance driving the agitation is the stringent documentation required under the SIR, which critics argue will disproportionately impact marginalized populations.

Highlighting the impracticality of the guidelines, former Minister B.T. Lalitha Naik shared her personal concerns regarding the criteria:

“I am a former minister, yet I do not possess a passport, nor have I studied up to the SSLC level. Under these SIR guidelines, even I stand at risk of being excluded from the voters’ list. If this is the precarious situation of a former minister, what will be the fate of the impoverished, the Dalits, the Adivasis, and the minorities?”

Activists have framed the protest as a necessary intervention to protect the democratic fabric of the state, urging all constitution-abiding citizens to join the movement. Striking a defiant note on the political implications of the rollout, Noor Sridhar, State President of Karnataka Janashakti, emphasized that the state would block these unconstitutional measures:

“The BJP is under the illusion that the SIR process is unstoppable. However, Karnataka will halt and tie down this political Ashvamedha Yaga. The public gathering at Freedom Park will serve as a ‘trailer’ of how Karnataka intends to shatter these illusions and repel this unconstitutional attitude.”

Organizers have issued a stern warning to the authorities, stating that Karnataka will not tolerate manipulative tactics aimed at compromising democratic processes, calling upon the public to actively resist the revision exercise.

<p id="pvc_stats_13383" class="pvc_stats total_only " data-element-id="13383"
